Slumdog Millionaire

In the film, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ by Danny Boyle there was a conflict between Prem Kumar the show host and Jamal. This conflict happens throughout the film from the opening scene. In this conflict, the director uses techniques to boldly show the power balances between the host and Jamal. This conflict is important because it helps you understand the idea “love will conquer all”.

Only one person according to the film has won the grand prize in the show ‘Who wants to  be a millionaire’. That one person was the show host. He did not want anyone winning the grand prize since it would prove costly for the business. One night when he was hosting the show he met Jamal. The show host thought it would be another statistic since he found he was form the slum. As the show progressed, he saw that Jamal was no ordinary person from the slum. The show host wanted to stop Jamal from winning and done everything in his power to do so. Jamal on the other hand used the game show to find a loved one. He knew that the longer he can stay on the show, the more attention he attracts hopefully catching Latika’s attention. Both of these people have different intentions, which do not agree with each other, which make this a conflict.

The director uses sound effects in this conflict to add further impact. One way when sound effects created a further impact was when at the start of the film straight after we see Jamal getting slapped in the face and four questions appeared. Usually the best way to confront a question is to have a calm head. Those questions did not appear for a long time. When those questions appeared, we also heard a clock ticking as well. Now we know that we do not have time to think about them, which adds pressure. In addition, there is no other disturbing sound that commands you to concentrate and gives that feeling that you must answer it. Sound effects are important because they add impact to many scenes.

Another technique the director uses to add impact and show power balances is the use of cinematography. One way cinematography added impact was when the director uses the mid 2 shot when the host and Jamal face each other. This shot brings a lot of tension because it has them both facing each other and it looks like a standoff. This shot also shows that from a spectator view that they are ready to perform. Another show they use to add impact is the bird’s eye view shot. They use this particular shot when Jamal and the show host were still facing off. Using this shot made you feel that they are in a gladiator type arena and they have nowhere to hide, it is just two people squaring off. Using cinematography adds further impact because they reveal power balances between Jamal and the show host.

The contrast in acting, style and dialogue of the two characters also show the conflict between them. These gestures add impact. Prem is an arrogant character. One way he shows this is his sarcasm and answers back to Jamal. Prem does this to degrade Jamal and makes sure he does not increase his publicity. These gestures and actions Prem performed added impact because it showed that Prem did not like Jamal and using gestures boldly shows this. Also using gestures shows how arrogant Prem can be. Using gestures add impact because when characters use gestures it adds more meaning to their actions
