Written Response to Cut

In the poem ‘Cut’ written by Silvia Plath. This poem is about the experience the writer faces when she mistakenly cut the top of her thumb instead of cutting an onion, while she was cooking. As the poem progresses she went form being an excited, hyped person to being a terrified scared person.

One of the many techniques she uses to create a bold image in the reader’s mind was the use of similes. For example when she said “A flap like a hat”. The writer gave us the image that her cut skin was just sitting there and it was a big piece she cut. She also gave us the image that it is just hanging and sitting there.

The second technique she used was metaphors. One time she used metaphors was when the writer said “out of a gap a million soldiers run”. The writer gave a picture that out of her cut a lot of blood was rushing. It relates to how soldiers act when in combat but all of them coming out of one place. The many techniques used helped me to imagine and clearly know how she was feeling and what she was experiencing.

At the start of the. Poem, the mood of the poem it was giving to us readers was excitement, as the poem progresses the mood starts to change and it give us a terrified mood. One instance at the start of the poem when it was giving us an exciting mood was when she stated “What a thrill, my thumb instead of an onion”. This showed excitement because so much has happened but described in only a few words, also we don’t really know what is happening so it also creates a suspense making us want to know what it going to happen next. During the middle of the poem she starts losing confidence in herself we start to find this out when she says “How you jump ----, Trepanned veteran, Dirty girl, Thumb stump”. She is telling herself off for her actions and why she done it in the first place.

This poem is a very interesting poem. It is interesting because the writer uses many techniques to create a bold image in the reader’s mind. Secondly, how the mood changes unexpectingly and how the writer makes us understand quite clearly how it changes.
